How often should emergency lighting be tested?

A planned regime should suit the system and current standards. Tests must be recorded, faults corrected and full-duration tests timed so batteries can recharge before the building is exposed to avoidable risk.

Emergency lighting FAQs

Is emergency lighting required in every workplace?

It is required where necessary to allow safe escape if normal lighting fails. Some very simple premises may rely on acceptable borrowed lighting or another justified arrangement, but the decision must come from the fire risk assessment and applicable guidance.

How often should emergency lights be tested?

A common standards-based regime combines routine visual checks, a monthly functional test and an annual full-rated-duration test. The system design, manufacturer information and risk assessment should set the actual arrangements.

How long should emergency lighting last?

Rated duration depends on the premises and evacuation or reoccupation needs. Three hours is common, but it should not be assumed without checking the design, fire strategy and applicable standard.

Why did a light fail after passing the monthly test?

A short monthly test confirms initial operation but may not reveal a battery that cannot sustain the rated duration. That is one reason a properly managed annual duration test is also important.

Can emergency lights be tested during working hours?

Short tests often can be managed safely, but a full-duration test depletes batteries and needs planning around occupancy, daylight, recharge time and temporary precautions.
