Research method

Trace a figure back to its source

A number is more useful when its period, definition, geography and revision status travel with it.

01

Acquire

Use official, attributable publications and record the extraction date.

02

Reconcile

Check totals, labels, programme overlap and changes in methodology.

03

Explain

Show denominators, caveats and distinctions that affect interpretation.

04

Maintain

Review releases, update dated pages and publish corrections when needed.

For councils, journalists and researchers

Use a stable profile instead of an isolated statistic

Link to the relevant dashboard or selected borough profile so readers can see the source, period and limitations alongside the figure. Suggested citations and reuse guidance are available on a dedicated page.

Use and cite our fire-safety data

From area data to premises evidence

Statistics cannot assess an individual building

Area-level data does not determine whether a particular premises is compliant or safe. The responsible person still needs a suitable and sufficient assessment based on the actual building, occupants, hazards and precautions.
