Alarm design category guide
P1, P2, L1 to L5 and LD1 to LD3 describe different fire-alarm objectives and coverage. The right category should follow the fire risk assessment and fire strategy—not a rule that the lowest number is always best.
Alarm category matrix
The category describes an objective and extent of coverage. It is not a simple quality score, and domestic grades answer a different question from domestic LD categories.

A domestic grade describes system construction and power arrangements; it does not replace the LD coverage category.
Scope note: The FRA and fire strategy establish the objective. A competent designer should define the category, areas, interfaces, variations and response arrangements.
Two standards
BS 5839-1:2025 is the current code of practice for fire detection and alarm systems in non-domestic premises. BS 5839-6:2019+A1:2020 covers domestic premises. Mixed-use buildings may require both approaches in different areas and careful interface design.
The Fire Safety Order requires appropriate warning arrangements but does not prescribe one BS category for every premises. The FRA and strategy establish the objective; a competent designer turns it into a system specification.
Non-domestic life safety
M is a manual system. L categories add automatic fire detection for life safety. Lower or higher numbers do not represent a simple quality ranking: each category has a defined coverage objective.

Exact category
A Category L4 system provides automatic fire detection in circulation spaces that form part of escape routes, such as corridors and stairways. Its purpose is to give a modest level of life protection by warning people before smoke makes those routes unusable.
L4 does not normally mean automatic detection inside every room opening onto the route; that broader objective belongs to L3. An L4 proposal therefore needs to be checked against the actual occupancy, travel distances, fire development, evacuation strategy and sector guidance rather than accepted because it is the cheapest automatic option.

Non-domestic property protection
P categories focus on protecting property, assets and business continuity, often by detecting fire early and transmitting a signal to an alarm-receiving centre. They do not replace a life-safety category where people also need automatic warning.
A P1 fire alarm system provides automatic detection throughout the premises for property protection. A P2 fire alarm system provides automatic detection only in defined areas where fire is more likely or where the consequences for property or operations are particularly serious.

Domestic premises
In domestic premises, LD categories describe the extent of automatic detection intended for life safety. The correct category depends on the dwelling, occupants and applicable housing or building guidance.
LD1 is the broadest of the three coverage categories. LD2 adds detection in specified higher-risk areas to the LD3 escape-route coverage, while LD3 is limited to circulation spaces forming escape routes. The category should be written alongside the system grade where the specification requires both.

Specification and verification
The category should be derived from the FRA, fire strategy, occupancy, evacuation arrangements and relevant sector guidance. The responsible person, risk assessor, competent alarm designer and other project professionals may need to coordinate; an installer should not silently redefine the objective.
The proposal should state category, coverage, drawings, cause-and-effect, interfaces, monitoring, audibility or visual alarm needs, variations and certification. Commissioning and maintenance then test whether the installed system achieves that specification.

LD1 provides the broadest domestic detection coverage. LD2 adds specified higher-risk areas to LD3 escape-route coverage. LD3 is limited to circulation spaces forming escape routes.
LD1 is a domestic coverage category. Grade A describes a type of domestic system construction. They answer different questions and may both appear in a specification.
