What fire alarm servicing involves

Fire alarm servicing is a competent-person inspection and maintenance activity. It is separate from the weekly user test and should examine the system condition, functions, devices, power supplies, records, false alarms, changes and outstanding faults.

For many non-domestic systems, BS 5839-1 recommends inspection and servicing at intervals not exceeding six months. The appropriate frequency can be shorter where the risk, system condition, premises use or previous faults justify it.

How often does a commercial fire alarm need servicing?

Is the weekly alarm test a service?

No. The weekly user test confirms a basic alarm function. Servicing is a more detailed competent-person inspection and maintenance visit.

Should every detector be tested at every visit?

Can a service engineer reset an existing fault?

A fault should be diagnosed and its safety impact recorded. Resetting an indication without resolving the cause does not demonstrate that the system is dependable.
