Its expected performance depends on the opening, leaf, frame, fixings, seals, hinges, closer, latch, glazing, apertures, installation and ongoing use. The correct detail varies with the compartment line and building design.

What is a fire door?

A fire door is a complete tested or assessed doorset intended to resist fire and, where required, smoke for a stated period. Performance depends on the leaf, frame, hardware, seals, glazing, installation and condition.

How often should fire doors be inspected?

Frequency should reflect legal duties, risk, use and damage. In specified multi-occupied residential buildings over 11 metres, communal fire doors require checks at least every three months and flat entrance fire doors require best-endeavours checks at least annually.

Does every fire door need to be FD30S?

No. The required integrity and smoke-control performance depends on the door location, compartmentation and approved building design. FD30S is common but not a universal specification.

Can an existing fire door without certification remain in use?

Potentially. Government residential guidance says absence of modern certification alone does not make an older door unfit. Its construction, condition, intended role, original standard and current risk still need proportionate assessment.
