No single portable extinguisher is suitable for every fire. Use only equipment selected for the premises and only on the classes and conditions stated on its label.

How a dry powder extinguisher works

Standard dry powder interferes with the chemical chain reaction that sustains flame, producing rapid knockdown across the fire classes for which the extinguisher is rated.

It provides little cooling and creates a dense cloud that can obscure exits, impair breathing and contaminate equipment. Those consequences are why broad fire-class capability does not make powder the best general-purpose choice indoors.

Enclosed spaces

Government guidance warns that powder can reduce visibility and affect breathing. It is not generally the preferred provision for offices, shops and similar interiors.

Electrical equipment

Powder is non-conductive, but residue can seriously damage electronics and does not remove the electrical energy source.

Gas fires

Extinguishing a flame while gas continues to escape can create an explosive cloud. Fuel isolation and the emergency plan are critical.

Powder compatibility

ABC and Class D powders are different. For metals, specify an agent tested for the exact material and never improvise.

Life safety comes first

Portable extinguishers support escape; they do not make firefighting compulsory

Raise the alarm, begin the evacuation procedure and call 999. A person should only consider using an extinguisher if they have been instructed or trained, the fire is small, the correct unit is available, smoke is not affecting them and a clear escape route remains behind them. Never delay evacuation or take personal risk.

Keep the provision usable and correctly specified

Routine checks should identify discharged, damaged, missing, obstructed or out-of-date equipment. Competent servicing should confirm condition, agent, rating, position, signage and records, while the fire risk assessment should be reviewed when hazards or layouts change.
