What types of hold-open arrangement are available?
Hard-wired electromagnetic retainers release when their supply or alarm signal changes. Integrated free-swing or hold-open closers allow easier movement but retain a controlled closing function. Some devices listen for an alarm sound and have defined environmental and alarm-signal limitations.
Selection must fit the fire strategy, alarm system, door, users, risk and doorset evidence.

System coordination
What must the device connect to?
The design may rely on the fire alarm, local detection, power supplies, cause-and-effect and time controls. Smoke detectors may be needed on both sides or in defined positions depending on the arrangement and standard.
A device that releases but leaves the door obstructed, unlatched or unable to overcome floor resistance has not achieved the objective. Test the entire sequence.

- Closer shuts and latches the leaf
- Reset procedure does not mask a fault
Routine control
How should hold-open devices be managed?
Include devices in routine fire-door and alarm testing arrangements. Record failed release, depleted batteries, altered sounders, obstruction and changes to the space. Close doors at appropriate times where the management plan requires it.
Do not fit a device purely to solve complaints about opening force without reviewing accessibility, alarm compatibility and the door’s fire role.
