BS 476 vs BS EN 1634-1
BS 476-22 has historically been used for fire-resistance testing of door assemblies in the UK. BS EN 1634-1 is the European fire-resistance test method for doorsets and openable windows. Smoke leakage is assessed through the relevant smoke-control test and classification route.
The notation and supporting classification differ, so do not translate a result solely by matching the number of minutes. Review the complete evidence and intended regulatory route.

Current transition
Is BS 476 evidence being withdrawn from Approved Document B?
The Government has announced removal of national fire-resistance classifications from Approved Document B from 2 September 2029, with stated transitional arrangements. As of August 2026, that future date has not yet passed.
This is not a statement that every existing door tested to BS 476 becomes defective in 2029. Building work, product routes, existing-building risk and legacy evidence require careful project-specific interpretation.
Read beyond the headline
What should a test or assessment report establish?
Confirm the specimen, dimensions, orientation, leaf and frame construction, hardware, seals, glazing, supporting construction and results. An assessment or field of application may support defined variations, but should be traceable to suitable test evidence and competent authorship.
The installed door still needs to match the supported configuration. A test certificate cannot compensate for incorrect site work, later alteration or poor maintenance.
