Follow the escape plan, check only from a safe position and call 999 if there is smoke, heat, burning smell or doubt. Do not silence the warning and remain in a potentially affected room.
Once the source is confirmed as non-fire, use the product’s approved hush or reset method and ventilate the area where appropriate.
Common causes
Environment, contamination and age can all affect an alarm
Cooking aerosols, steam, dust from building work, insects, sprays, condensation and poor airflow can reach the sensing chamber. A low battery usually causes a periodic chirp rather than a full alarm, although sound patterns vary.
An expired or damaged sensor can become unreliable. Identify the model, warning pattern and replacement date before deciding the remedy.

Corrective action
Fix the source without creating a protection gap
Clean the exterior and vents only as the manufacturer permits. Improve kitchen extraction, close the bathroom door while showering and avoid spraying aerosols near alarms.
If the device is the wrong type or position, arrange a suitable replacement rather than simply moving it to an ineffective location. Test after any change and check interlinking.
